Students and faculty gathered Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the University of the Incarnate Word’s Wellness Center for a Zumba Marathon, a Latin-flavored, dance-and-fitness program incorporating yoga and hip-hop.
The two-hour event, which took place on the basketball court of the Wellness Center, not only consisted of upbeat, Latin-flavored music by artists such as Pitbull, but it also integrated hit songs such as the “Wobble” and “Sexy and I Know It”.
“Doing the ‘Wobble’ was my favorite part of the Zumba Marathon,” said sophomore Aubrey Perez. “It was surprisingly a really great workout.”
After the first hour of dancing, guests of the marathon did a short cool-down workout, with many water breaks included throughout. Then, the hip-hop and yoga lesson was taught during the next hour. During the hip-hop lesson, students and staff learned choreographed dance moves to Drake’s “The Motto.”
“I’ve never been able to dance that good, but the teacher made it so easy to move and have rhythm with the music,” said pre-pharmacy major Shannon Nguyen. “I loved being able to break a sweat and have fun dancing to good music! I really hope there’s another Zumba Marathon next semester too.”
